I've an iBook, I beleve it to be, offically, an iBook2 500. Anyway, it's 500MHz, g3, 12 inch display, dual usb, ATI Rage Mobility M3.

I'm running the gentoo kernel 2.6.8 and the X.org 6.7. I am not using DRI because I could not get it working and havn't had time to try again recently.

My question is about the VGA out: When I have the book pluged into the monitor it will display OFW and mac os9 just fine, but when I try to go into linux it seems to cut off when it goes to framebuffer mode.

I'd like to do a presentation or two off this thing to my local computer user group, but that is kind of out of the question without a projector/vga-out. Is my best bet to get DRI working? Will that even fix it?

I'd like to get DRI/opengl working eitherway, has anyone with this laptop/card got any "sure bet" links?

There is a wiki here which might give you some clues.

By the way, I think the MergedFB stuff is now in xorg 6.8, so it maybe be possible to just apply this patch (mentioned on the wiki) to xorg 6.8 and have VGA out work. I've been interested in getting CloneMode to work properly on my iBook G4, so might give this a shot in the next month or so.

The problem with the Wiki [the bits about the graphics anyway] is that all but that first paragraph deals with the Radeon used in the powerbooks (and later ibooks?). But that bit about it showing up as two cards ... I'm going to have to look into that.

I'm off to google, but if somone could post a/n (link to) xorg.conf for the rage128, it would be an imense help.

There exists the tool m3mirror for the rage128 in older iBook2. The problem is still that you can't set a correct refresh rate so that the image will flicker in any case. Don't expect that the author of m3mirror will fix it. It's too old stuff...

If I do presentations with my iBook I have to boot into Mac OS X. It's a bummer, but no other workaround is possible.

I am working on an G3 iBook Dual USB, that has 16MB grafic card.

When I start X with MergedFB, I get a flickering picture on the second screen. It is really moving and flickering a lot horiziontally.
But the ibook screen acts weird: It's getting brighter and brighter and as if the screen mask behind was appearing.
It's looking dangerous and I have to switch to the terminal fast.
This happens as soon as I switch MergedFB on (and therefor even UseFBDev off).

Pao.
