I have a G4 Powerbook and I downloaded the live CD for PPC. However I cannot get KDE to run.

I edited the rc.conf file, but all i have is a prompt for root. I have tried startx but it is an unknown command.

Have you actually installed gentoo on your harddisk first? KDE and X aren't installed on the livecd. You first have to install onto your harddisk, reboot using your new install, emerge kde and you should be good as gold :-)

HTH,

The PPC live cd's contain KDE... at least the one I have does. The problem is it isn't set up on boot. You need to configure X first. I haven't used the cd in a while, but I think if you type in 'setup' it will start a script that will guide you throguh the process.
