As I know, there are no drivers for NVIDIA. The default driver 'NV' is horrible.

About DVD-R, you can use it.

For multimedia, Gentoo on iMac G5 is not good.

yeah, the nv drivers are bad, but you will still be able to use VESA driver and get X, although, as he said, multimedia will suck ( it pretty much does in every case wiht linux on ppc) umm, yeah, I think it will work, fine. just dont buy an Airport extreme

currently there is no livecd, which boots on a apple iMac G5. (some wired serial ata driver stuff)

But patches are going to included in future releases of the kernel. So you have to wait a few days/weeks...

Check tgalls homepage for new live cd releases: http://dev.gentoo.org/~tgall/

What about processor down-scale and fan management?
I'm going to buy an iMac G5 soon, but i wouldn't like to burn the G5 CPU, you know... ;)
I ask because i heard some issues with powermacs fan management (i don't know if they are resolved as of today) and i think temperatures get critical in an iMac......
