Hi,

I would like to make a PPC LiveCD for booting so that I can backup my hard drive using dd. I have an external hard disk, connected via Firewire that I'd like to back up to.

Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem as if the LiveCD I'm using (it's the 2004.1-- the last one I had laying around) supports Firewire. I looked at using Catalyst to roll my own CD, but it all seems a bit more complex than I was expecting. All I need is a kernel that supports firewire, sbp2, has a few extra binaries on it, etc. My thought is that it would be easiest just to modify a LiveCD, i.e., compile a kernel and put the binaries on there somewhere.

I'm also a bit confused about how booting with a CD works on PPC. I see that there is a yaboot.conf file; I was under the impression that yaboot stuff was stored in OF. How does a yaboot.conf on a CD change this? Also, as for gcloop? Is this some kind of initrd? The gcloop project page seems to be a little sparse on information (or maybe I need to practice my hacker-fu a little more?).

As I write this I'm realizing that I know even less about LiveCDs than I thought I did a few minutes ago. Catalyst, for example, automates the build process for LiveCD's. How? What does it DO? Anyone care to enlighten me a little? I'll gladly RTFM if you point me in the right direction (I've been looking!).

Thanks,
-b

Not sure if the PPC LiveCD has it, but you could try extracting the .config from the gzipped /proc/config.gz:
Code:
# gzcat /proc/config.gz > livecd/.config
Hth...
