I am trying to setup Gentoo on a G3 iMac... only once catch: the built in network card is toast, so I have a Linksys USB100M to use with the machine. Here is the question: I have setup the disk, chrooted into the new file system, and used a portage snapshot from the install CD. What where do I go from here, in order to get the Linksys adapter working, get a kernel on the machine, and emerge the various minor packages I need to finish the install?

I have successfully installed Gentoo on many different x86 machines, so I pretty much understand the install process, and why you have to do each step, but I find myself now at a total loss on how to proceed...

Have you tried the install with a 2.6 kernel. I'm not familiar with the kernels on the latest livecd's, but in past livecd's the SMP kernel is from the 2.6 branch. This will give you greater functionality and you may find your ethernet will work automatically.

Basically you just need your system to recognize the USB (by starting hotplug) and have the correct kernel module loaded. Unfortunatly I have no idea what module you need though.

Well, the latest PPC livecd I could find was 2004.1. There didn't seem to be one from 2004.2. I am gonna reboot and specify an smp kernel at boot.
I did also track down the kernel module name I needed for this ethernet card, but I don't have it on hand at the moment, but it started with a capital "C"... will have to look that up again.

no dice... the only module available under /lib/modules/KV/kernel/drivers/usb/net is pegasus, which I found several places online saying specifically that the pedasus driver does NOT work with the Linksys USB100M.
I did find a few places that said the "kaweth" driver should work with this adapter, but I am back to the same point: I need a precompiled module that I can plop into the system...

I am now downloading the 2004.3 PPC liveCD, to see where that gets me... anyone have a simple explanation for why the 2004.1 release contained the PPC liveCD images, the 2004.2 didn't, and then 2004.3 does?
