Typing Russian characters
[edit]

KDE

Make sure you have Russian i18n installed. Go to Regional & Accessibility - Keyboard Layout in the KDE Control Center. Add the Russian layout to your active layouts. You might want to choose the phonetic Layout variant (yawerty, or яверты). With the flag icon in your taskbar you can now switch between different layouts.

Many letters now are where you expect them to be (for example s - с, p - п, g - г), but some others are harder to find:
` ю
= ч
[ ш
] щ
\ э
# ё (shift 3)
$ Ё (shift 4)
[edit]

XFree86

XFree86 4.3 may be configured for Russian keyboard layout in the Keyboard InputDevice section of the configuration file (typically /etc/X11/XF86Config). Add the following two lines to that section:

Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru"
Option "XkbOptions" "grp:shift_toggle"

This arrangement will allow you to switch between US and Russian layouts by pressing the shift keys together. Note that this configuration is independent of the desktop environment (GNOME, KDE) or window manager (sawfish, metacity, kwin) in use.

Thank you for your extensive reply :D But I'm not really much of an advanced linux user and I don't know how to install "i18n" Can you give me more information on how to do this? I tried to emerge it by using keywords like 'i18n' or 'cps' but it didn't work out. :(

als je

emerge -s i18n

had gedaan, had je dit resultaat gekregen:

* kde-base/kde-i18n
Latest version available: 3.3.1
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 247,787 kB
Homepage: http://www.kde.org/
Description: KDE 3.3.1 - i18n: kde-i18n
License: GPL-2

Dus:
emerge kde-i18n

als je het volgende doet:

1. Log in and run KDE Control Center.
2. Go to "Regional & Accessibility".
3. Don't change the language. Go straight to "Keyboard Layout".
4. Click the box for "Enable keyboard layouts".
5. Under "Additional Layouts", select the "ru" layouts.
6. Click "apply".
