It wasn't noticeable before gnome 2.8 but I'd hacked myself into a corner with the old (residual) xfree86 extensions.
If you're system is slow and dying after upgrading to gnome 2.8 check see if you have this entry in your xorg.conf, it's the "Composite" that will affect you worse. I left the comments in mine for future hacking.
#Section "Extensions"
# Option "Composite" "Enable"
# Option "RENDER" "Enable"
#EndSection
Well maybe it won't speed up your sex life but gnome 2.8 is many, many times faster. |

Of course, this will disable the nifty little shadows and transparency and whatever the new Metacity gives you. Also this only affects xorg 6.8 and up...
(If you still like the shadows, try xcompmgr and transset) _________________ Platypus. |

Does Metacity have tranparency and shadows. I can't get it enabled. Where do you set it? _________________ "Take THAT Lisa's belief's" - Homer |

For shadows, try
in console. Try
and select a window to make transparency. |

Yeah I know that. Both work horribly poorly. I was just wondering about integrated shadows, etc. available through Metacity. Is this true? _________________ "Take THAT Lisa's belief's" - Homer |

Any news about native support of xorg shadows and transparencies in gnome/metacity? _________________ La PDA de tungsteno |

I noticed that having composite enabled with xorg 6.8.0-r1, -r3 caused sdl apps to run poorly....so you may want to keep that in mind. |
