I just downloaded the live ppc cd. I have never used linux before and I just wanted to see what it is like. My question is, How do I load into a GUI?

Thanks

If you just want to test out Linux, assuming you are going to use it as a desktop, it is better to go with a Knoppix bootable cd. The Gentoo Live CDs are used for installing Gentoo, not a preview of Gentoo. So if you would like to take a look at Linux boot to a knoppix CD (With KDE Desktop Manager) or something like Damn Small Linux (for a lighter WM).

which brings up an interesting question...is there a linux live cd for a ppc?

i don't recall seeing a ppc knoppix live cd in existance...i hope i'm wrong because then i could grab the xorg config file it generates and get my X working on my imac G3 after a month of tearing my hair out :(

I think there is someone that did or was working on a PPC Knoppix. But Knoppix development is basically focussing on x86. There is no "official" support for PowerPC.

Art: Have you tried Xautoconfig yet? It's a program that configures Xorg for ppc machines. I'd be interested in hearing if it works (Or if it doesn't :))

Cheers!

holy moly it worked! ok it didnt work straight off the bat...for some reason the vsync rate it generated was 75-60 which kinda confused it. but changing it to just 70 gave me a working X!

thanks Jose, much appreciated!

I used this a while back...

http://debian.tu-bs.de/knoppix/powerPC/

It works, but it'd be nice to see an updated version. I haven't had any luck finding a newer one. :(
