I just rebuilt my G5 yesterday using the latest 2004.3 PPC iso.

Grab it here:

http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/releases/ppc64/2004.3/

My install was seamless.

I installed gentoo on my powermac 7,3 DP 1.8. I used tgall's 2004.3 beta2 live cd. As far as I know it is the first live CD that will boot this particular machine. I installed using 2004.3 stage3 and didn't adjust any cflags. The main problem that I had was that while the live CD, which is based on gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.9-r1 controls the fans, when I compile the kernel using the same sources there is no thermal support and the fans run at full speed. I had to use sources 2.6.10_mm in order to control the fans. I used the default config in arch/ppc64/configs/g5_default and enabled devfs. The kernel boots and the fans are under control but there is some funkiness with usb at startup.

One problem that I have had is that I was not able to compile xorg-x11. I tried both 6.7.0-r2 (which is marked stable for ppc64) and 6.8.0-r1 which is marked ~ppc64. Therefore my desktop environment is "screen".

Sound does not work. I used yaboot-static.

I had no problems. I just followed the PPC Handbook step-by-step.

It's important to remember not to emerge sync until you are done building the system, since you'll wanna grab the portage snapshot from the mirror from which you pull your 2004.3 iso.

I made use of the stage3 tarball as well.

I did not emerge yaboot static. I just used whatever was already there. :) (Don't forget mkofboot -v)

Xorg 6.8.0-r1
KDE 3.3.0

CFLAGS="-02 -mcpu=G5 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe"
