I think my G5 is still louder under gentoo ppc64 than under OSX, though thermal control is enabled. Does anyone happen to know how to make it quieter? I vaguely remember under linux only cpu fans are controlled, the other fans are fixed at half(?) speed. But where can I change the controls of other fans?

I'm no expert but the files you need to look at are:
Code:
/usr/src/linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r11/drivers/macintosh/therm_pm72.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r11/drivers/macintosh/therm_pm72.c

In particular I believe but could be wrong you have to change the value of
Code:
#define SLOTS_FAN_DEFAULT_PWM           50 /* Do better here ! */

Read the therm_pm72.c file there is some explanation on how the things are implemented.

I suppose it goes without saying that changing stuff in therm_pm72.c/h could render your G5 not workable!

You are right. Now my machine is much quieter after I changed the value to 40.
Thank you.

Thats good. I'm thinking of doing that too.

I would have to agree that compared to OS X, the G5 fans sound a little "loud" but of course they are still much better than without the fan pm72 module (i've experienced that!).

I was wondering what kind of applications you run on your G5?
I don't run anything really intensive on my G5 and therefore I assume going from 50 to 40 is fairly safe.

Thanks for reporting back.

I usualluy do java and web programming with my G5, but not intensively. I often run jboss(4.0),mysql(4.0.22), and proftpd servers. Sometime I would like to listen mp3 while I am programming, or watch dvd/video when I am taking a rest.

Just did the mod to 40. Yes there is a noticeable difference.

Thanks xyz for stating what you do on your G5. I suppose if between us the G5 doesn't burn up then going to 40 is OK :)
