I've inherited a G4 Cube and 17" Studio Display. I have Gentoo installed on my clamshell iBook, and would like to get things running on this desktop.

Power Mac G4 Cube
450 MHz
1.12GB Memory

ATY,Rage128Pro
1280 x 1024 @ 32 bits

I had to add "video=ofonly" to the boot options to get a display for starting from the Universal PPC 2004.3 CD, and that worked fine for the install process.

When I booted to the installed kernel, after playing around with yaboot several times to get the config right, I initially received errors about /dev/hda not existing--had to emerge devfsd. With that done, the kernel booted, but then I had a PAM Failure, and had to emerge shadow.

Now, when I try to boot to the kernel, it hangs on the video, which it didn't before--so I don't understand what changed. I've appended "video=ofonly" to the kernel parameters in my yaboot.conf, and that worked to boot it on the two previous ocassions.

This is what I see when the kernel hangs:
Code:
Using unsupported 1280x1024 ATY,Rage128Pd at 9600800, depth=8, pitch=1280
console: switching to color frame buffer device 160x64
fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /pci@f0000000/ATY,Rage128Pd@10
Generic RTC driver v1.07
Macintosh non-volatile memory driver v1.1
Linux agpart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
agpart: Detected Apple UniNorth chipset
agpart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 691M
agpart: configuring for size idx: 4
agpart: AGP apeture is 16M @ 0x0
It stops short at those lines, with one underscore on a newline and no other sign of activity.

My yaboot.conf looks like this:
Code:
boot=/dev/hda4
device={the OpenFirmware Path--which is good}
partition=6
delay=10
root=/dev/hda6
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot

image=/boot/vmlinux
           label=Linux
           read-only
           append="video=ofonly"
macosx=/dev/hda3
enablecdboot
enableofboot

Any help on what I need to do to get this working is appreciated. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the kernel .config. I've probably done something wrong there, but as usual the handbook instructions don't quite match Real Life kernel menus.

I had to play around with my kernel configuration, but it's booted to the console now.

I'll post my kernel config when I have X working, which is another trial, apparently.
