Like the subject says, I've a G4 Cube and 17" Studio Display.

I've installed from the 2004.3 PPC universal disk, and am trying to get Xorg set up.

I've got a text login, and have emerged xorg. I've had to use the "video=ofonly" option to the kernel at boot to get the text login, or I get black screen.

When trying to run
Code:
X -configure
I get this:
Code:
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (once-only module, 0)
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
(EE) R128(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)
and when I try to start X with this configuration, I get
Code:
(EE) R128(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)
(EE) R128(0): No DFP detected

If I put in Framebuffer device information from this thread, https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=256306&highlight=framebuffer+ati, I get a blue hashed screen with an "X" cursor which moves.

Any help here? As soon as I get this machine up in X, I'll be posting what I have for configs.

B

I have exactly the same machine and same problem, except that I can boot to the console without special arguments to the kernel.
Have you found the answer?

I think the thing that made my console work was this kernel setting:
Code:

x                    [*] Support for frame buffer devices                                      x x
  x x                    [*]   Enable Video Mode Handling Helpers                                  x x

  x x                    [*]   Apple "platinum" display support                                    x x

  x x                    < > nVidia Riva support                                                   x x
  x x                    < > Matrox acceleration                                                   x x
  x x                    < > ATI Radeon display support (Old driver)                               x x
  x x                    < > ATI Radeon display support                                            x x
  x x                    <*> ATI Rage128 display support

edit In fact, this does not seem to be it. The problem is, If I enable ADB support, then
I hang at startup right after the lines that talk about the graphics card. If I add "video=ofonly" then I can boot to the console, but Xorg complains, as before, that it cannot find the device mouse. So I do not even have as much X as you did .[/b]

Actually, my Cube has a 15 inch monitor. But, for those who come across this thread,
here is how I got it to work:
Using 2.6.10-r1 kernel from development-sources, I configured with
Code:
 make pmac_defconfig

I then coppied the XF86config-4 from my powerbook and changed the driver name
from ati to r128. Here it is:
Code:
