Hi,

is there any bootable memtester for PPC with which I can test my memory? I got several segfaults with gcc and so tried "memtester" (on livecd) which indeed terminates without getting a lock. But beeing a userspace program it can't really test the "physical" memory.

So, is there some memtest.x86 for PPC?

Thanks
Marcel

Segfaults with gcc are usually caused by having preempt turned on in your kernel. Verify that it's off and let us know if that fixed the problem.

Good luck!

The "apple hardware test" CD that comes with your computer (if it's recent enough) does that.

Hmm... And that memtester can't allocate specific memory? But nonetheless, I will try to build the kernel without preempt and retry to build (in this case KDE). Since the errors are non deterministic I can't promise when I can give an answer.

Thanks

The problem is, it's no apple. Are the relevant parts of this CD freely = legaly downloadable?

Thank you

I'm 99% sure your problem is preempt if you've got it compiled in and you're having a problem with compiling KDE. Preempt isn't all that stable on ppc and is known to cause problems when compiling large C++ programs. Don't use it and expect things to work.

Hi there,

I'm back and my G4 compiled the whole KDE stuff without an error over the weekend after using a kernel without preempt! :-)

Thank you very much JoseJX!
