I have a dual 1.8 G5 and I run kde and sometimes I get a total freeze (lock) - the keyboard and mouse just don't respond. I bought the G5 in April 2004 and this freezing has happened I would say about 10 times but it's random. I have to resort to the power button to enable a reboot. Also /var/log/messages says nothing.

My kernel is :
Code:
uname  -a
Linux linux 2.6.7-gentoo-r11 #5 SMP Mon Nov 22 18:43:10 CET 2004 ppc PPC970, altivec supported PowerMac7,2 GNU/Linux

My xorg (locking also happened with xfree86 4.3.0) is
Code:
xorg-x11-6.7.0-r3

My graphics card is ati radeon 9600 pro. I don't have preempt in my I've kernel. I ext3 as my file system. I've run the apple hardware cd but no problems reported. I know I have a fault with the DVD rom drive which sometimes refuses to read cd/cd-r discs. However, I will contact apple again who say they will replace the dvd rom and then the logic board if the problem is still there after the
replaced dvd rom.

I don't use OS X that often but I did notice when first bought that it would lock/freeze especially if some DVD related activity was ongoing in conjucnion with web browsing. However, I'm hardly in OS X nowadays.

Any ideas on how to go about hunting down the problem ?
Also any other G5'ers with locks, freezes or hardware problems ?

The only thing I have noticed when the freeze happens is that the hard drive is being accessed along with when I'm surfing or moving the mouse. Eg, I was emerging and about to move the mouse and then I got the freeze.
This last freeze eventually made the G5's fans go to max after around 2 mins.

I'm of the opinion that it's probably hardware related since no other G5'ers have reported such freezes when using 32 or 64 gentoo.
