Hi guys,

from the portage tree I see that linux 2.4.x kernel support has been deprecated. I'm however interested in running 2.4.x on my powerbook 12' machine as I hope it will solve the problems I'm having trying to configure a MA-111 usb wireless card.

I downloaded vanilla 2.4.28 and compiled it using a very similar config file to that posted http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~schmidtm/apple/powerbook.en.php here. The toolchain is gcc-3.4.3. Everything seems ok during boot.. devices are detected and finally usb is detected. This also seems ok, but after this stage, the boot process stops for about a second and the machine simply reboots without any indication on what happened. From my experience with linux I belief this happens exactly the moment before /sbin/init gets started. I'm about to run some more tests but I'd like to know first if anyone is experiencing similar problems or has an idea of what may be causing them. It may be of interest that 2.6.x kernels work perfectly on this machine (using similar configs, to the degree that it is possible).

I will be very grateful if anyone can help me with this as I've already spent about two weeks trying to get that usb device working :)

Thanks in advance!

I made an additional test and it confirmed my suspicions. Normally, during boot, when init is about to be executed, the kernel opens the /dev/console device so that init gets an interactive console. For some reason this is only marked as a warning (printk) in the kernel source (init/main.c). I changed that line to a call to panic() and now the kernel process stops at this point. The original message that the kernel would show is: "Warning: unable to open an initial console". This however seems to me to be quite critical and I think it is probably related to the fact that my machine suddenly reboots at this point.

I have googled on this problem and all that shows up is people with very different setups or people who forgot to configure /dev/pts and unix98 pty support in the kernel. I'm not sure what my problem is. I have now modified some kernel options according to http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=7 but I don't think the changes are relevant.

Anyone, any idea? I'll keep you informed if there is progress on my side

sorry for the delay... I'm having a very busy day

my problems went away with the nth recompile. I discovered a couple of options in the document that were missing in my config:
[*] /dev file system support (OBSOLETE)
[*] Automatically mount at boot
[*] Virtual memory file system support (former shm fs)
Why other pb12's do work without this makes me wonder. It's probably gentoo specific. Sorry for useless messages :/

thanks for the help!
