Hi Kiddies! This may be common knowledge by now, but after 2 days of battling an old g3, I finally managed to get the 2004.3 LiveCD booting(complete with scsi and networking, woot.) and thought I'd share just in case it helps someone else.

There are lots of other existing posts on this subject, but none of them seemed to have the exact args that would work for me.

kernel args passed to BootX were:

[code]
rw init=/linuxrc cdroot looptype=gcloop video=atyfb:1024x768@75
[/code]

For some odd reason the machine would not boot when using BootX from OS9, however plugging the kernel options from a cold boot did work...go figure.

I have a similar problem trying to install 2004.3 on a Beige G3 and the arguments you mentioned helped, but when I get to the point where it detects my SCSI hard drive and tries to write to the / device which is /dev/sda, I get the error:

Code:
The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell.

If I enter in
Code:
/dev/sda/
I get the error :

Code:
Mounting root...
Cannot create directory 'newroot/tmp' : Readonly filesystem

I've looked at the linuxrc and /etc/initrd.scripts and /etc/initrd.default scripts, but I can't get it to I guess mount the scsi hard drive as read-write.

Any suggestions?

Here are my fstab and proc/scsi

Code:

cat /etc/fstab

/dev/ram0    /         ext2    defaults
proc             /proc   proc    defaults   0,0

Code:

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Host: scsi0 Channel: 00   Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Quantum Model: Viking II 9.1WSE  Rev4110
Type: Direct Access       ANSI SCSI Revesion: 02

Any ideas on this?
