So, I've got a fancy new external ieee1394 enclosure that's supposed to hold 4 ATA drives. It's actually just 2 Oxford 911-based 1394 adaptors, each one alowing a master and a slave drive, inside one enclosure. I figured it's at least possible that some of you PPC guys would be using something like this, and since I'm trying to use it with Gentoo on a G4, well...

I'm running 2.6.9-r1, and have the 1394 stuff and scsi stuff built as modules. When I load the relevent modules, the system detects one drive per controller. When I write or read to a drive, the activity lights for both drives on a given controller light up, so I think the driver just isn't differnetiating between the master and the slave. I don't know, though, and my experience with editing kernel driver source is rather limited. I do know, however, that this enclosure and all 4 drives work fine under OS X. I can unplug it right now, plug it in to a similar OS X box, and all 4 drives show up.

Note, I did post in the hardware forum about this, but haven't seen anything. So I'm reposting here.

Anyway, if anyone's got any idea where to start looking, I'd really appreciate it. It looks like I'm just about the only person on the internet using a 911 controller for 2 drives, though, which is a bit frightening... :)

Update:

It appears that writing only actually affects the slave drive on each device. I partitioned the sda and sdb that were recognized, and though the activity light for both drives was on, only the slave got partitioned.

This is with one controller's drives set to "cable select" and with one controller's drives set on "master/slave", BTW.
