I am dying to switch to Mac. Since i do not use windows anymore i finally can. Althoug i am currious of OSX pather, i want to be able to run Gentoo without problems too (as a primary OS even).
Is a dual boot possible? (sorry if this is a dumb question, i do not know anything about mac).
Also the most important thing: how well will Gentoo run on the new iMac G5?
I read something about:

- SATA works fine with SCSI support,
- airport extreme does not work and will never work,
- Graphics are only 2d nonaccelerated (it will not get better than this ever),
- termal contol does work,
- power management does not work at all,
- Sound does not work at all,
- firewire and USB2 do work.

Is all this correct? if so, is there any chance that sound and graphics will be working anytime soon? I really want to switch to mac, but not if linux (read: Gentoo) will not run like a charm.

Hope anybody can enlighten me on the subject.

Thanks in advance.

I believe that the Portage engine is actually build into the Mac. You will not have to dual boot since portage will be a part of your OSX operating system. You have to be careful using this as you might hose your whole system.

The above answer is correct if you run Gentoo for OSX (that is, the OSX port of Portage), but if you want to actually install Gentoo Linux that's possible as well. I haven't run Linux on as Apple hardware as the new iMac G5 so I'm not really qualified to answer your questions, but in my experience Linux works very well on the PPC. My main problem with that is that idiotic mouse - better get a 3+ button USB mouse unless you want running X to be a big pain (keyboard shortcuts to enable 2nd and 3rd mouse buttons isn't much fun in the long run).

Moved from 'Installing Gentoo'. I guess you will get your answers here.
