Added the following to the device section.

Option "force_pci_mode" "True"

Still no love.

Code:

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)

I believe that /dev/dri/card0 is just a symlink to a character device which is created by the kernel (devfs/devpts?). I do have drm set up in the kernel under agpgart (not that this iMac has AGP).

Perhaps I can create the link by hand?

K, so here's where I am now.

I have a /dev/dri dir that is empty. I believe (looking at another system) that when X loads the dri module, it dynamically creates card0. DRM then looks at the PCI ID of card0 and compars it to the PCI IDs in it's supported list. No match, no acceleration (regardless of whether the chipset is supported or not). I am going to hit the boards on the dri.sourceforge.net site to confirm this. It looks like I have to manually patch DRI.

Thank you for your time,
Frank Russo

Looks like the x11-drm package is broken for PPC as well. Will wait for the bug to be resolved before proceeding

So I now have hardware acceleration. The solution was to....

Download the latest DRI snapshot (common and mach64)
Extract it to /usr/src
Switch to gentoo-dev-sources as mm sources are missing symbols
compile the new kernel with DRM support
Go to usr/src/dripkg and run the installer for the mach64 kernel module
re-emerge x.org cause the dri whiz-bang installer coppied some i386 binaries (libGL.so) to my box.

I can now play a cd in xmms and grab/drag my firefox window around without causing the audio to skip!!!

I thought DRI meant 3D support(?)

It does. I use a GL visulization lugin for XMMS. Dragging anything over it (even a terminal window) used to make xmms skip/stutter.
