Sorry that this How to doesn't affect 95% of the linux world. But I felt I had to create this so hopefully PPC can get more support.

Here we go.........

1) Go get the installer https://helixcommunity.org/download.php/569/realplay-10.0.0.297-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-powerpc.bin

2) # Ensure that the .bin file you downloaded is executable. You can make the .bin file executable by running the "chmod a+x realplay-10.0.0.297-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-powerpc.bin" command from a terminal window.
# Execute the .bin file by typing ./realplay-10.0.0.297-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-powerpc.bin . It will provide you with several prompts and will walk you through the installation. ( I stole that from the readme. Kinda.)

3) Now here's the tricky part. You will have to remove the files swfformat.so and swfrender.so from ~/RealPlayer/plugins/ The reason being is because Flash doesn't work on PPC. Macromedia hasn't created one yet so untill then you have to kill the flash plugins. :(

4) Now run realplay and everything should work.

For the Mozilla-Firefox realplayer plugin do this.

Code:
cp ~/RealPlayer/mozilla/* /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins/

Now for me Realplayer is kinda jumpy. But at least I can listen to www.chemicalrecords.co.uk I also apolgize for anything I left out. I've been awake for a while now.

Enjoy :D

PS: I would make an Ebuild but that flash plugin kinda jacks everything up. And I'm unclear on how that would affect the ebuild process. If you would like to make one then hit it up.

realplay doesn't work for me. It starts the GUI, but when I load a file, it tries to resize the player to the video-size, but then it just consumes 100% of CPU. Only a kill can stop it.

Thank you very much. I got both players helix and real ver. 10.0.4 installed on an iBookG3.
Videostream is still really jumpy. I even tried to lower cpu usage and bandwith consumption, doesn't help.
I tested with our german news magazin Tagesschau, which is the main cause I need realplayer for.

Can you explain the difference between helix and real? All formats I tried only work with real, such as amazon audioclips and so on.

Hi,

Main difference is that Helix is only Opensource while Realplayer implements Realaudio, Realvideo and other not open Formats too.

Atleast that says their Faq :)

(I do not consider it a problem that you ask/write for Apple boxes ^^. I think its great that we can support this boxes too. Gentoo Rules!!)

It works fine here and pretty smooth on a 1GHz G4. I found that I had to disable RealPlayer's xv option or it would not play video streams consistently.

So for software overlay you will have enough performance with a G4. Maybe not with my G3-600. But good hint, that it's about the xv overlay.

HawkFB,

If you are still having the above problem try this:
Code:
# emerge libstdc++-v3

It did the trick for me when I ran into your problem after re-installing my system.
