Hi,

After some experience with Mandrake, I'm now trying to install gentoo on my PowerBook, with minimal success..
First time I tried a stage2 install which worked all the way until I had a kernel panic at the end of booting..
After trying lot's of kernel compiling I gave up.

Today, a couple of weeks later, I tried again.
Started with a stage2, but when trying "emerge system" I get an error saying "pam-login" can't be installed.
Apparently the tar-ball is changed, because I did everything the same..

Tired of it all I started with a stage3.
I expected an automatic generated kernel, but I had to configure it myself again (I'm not sure what I don't need in my kernel).
When I wanted to use yabootconfig it suddenly told me it couldn't find enough information for configuration..(??)

So I configured it manually, luckily without a problem.
But when I try to boot my Linux, I probably get a kernel panic; after a few seconds of booting the screen turns black...

I know I can get easier distro's like mandrake and YDL, but I really want to learn more about Linux.
Does anybody have a kernel config file for my laptop?
Or at least have some suggestions for me?
And why is the installation not consistent? (pam-login and yabootconfig)

Thanks for helping a newbie!

i have a 1Ghz tibook and also did not have much luck with the 2004.3 cd. I always got filesystems errors. I decided to try older cd's and ended up downloading and installing with 2004.2 and 2004.1 and even 2004.0. These distributions i feel gave me a more successful install but when i tried to update or install packages i would get either a pam login like you mentioned or a libacl.so error. you should have a look at some of my posts (in paritcular "today's the day" and "calling all powerbook iv users") and maybe we can solve some of our issues together. i have put gentoo down for about a week but have not given up on it yet.

In one of your threads somebody suggested
Code:
make pmac_defconfig

Before
Code:
make menuconfig

Which worked really well so far!
The kernel booted completely!
Only thing; the keyboard didn't work!

A new day tomorrow; I'm going to hit the hay..

http://stimuli.ca/linux/files/.config-2.6

rename that to .config and put it in /usr/src/linux

If you are not using 2.6 sources then 'emerge gentoo-dev-sources' first and make sure /usr/src/linux is a symlink to the proper kernel source dir.

upon reboot, you may need to 'modprobe airport' or 'modprobe sungem' for airport or ethernet, respectively.

You will also find this handy when you get X installed: http://stimuli.ca/linux/files/xorg.conf

Thanks stimuli,
but your config file is for your Pbook G3, isn't that a problem?

On your site you mention that it doesn't include SCSI.
How do you deselect this? Menuconfig always include them in my kernel.

In response to the pam login issue, please put the pam use flag in your make.conf. That should fix it.

ok thanks,
but should I put a pam flag or a -pam flag?

About the keyboard; I think Apple used a ADB controller for the keyboard, I've used the module for it and now the keyboard works..

in regards to pam as a use variable... one the gentoo use flage description page it says that this variable is dangerious to arbitrarily flip. what does this mean and should i take caution? oh and is a stage 1 tarball from 2004.1 different from the stage 1 off of 2004.3? i ask because i use the 2004.1 universal live cd but when given the option (i.e. portage kernels and loggers) i install the most recent versions. does this cause conflict?

I deleted everything from my root and used a freshly downloaded Stage2 tarball.
I put in the pam flag in my make.conf and made pmac_defconfig before configuring my kernel.

Everything is working so far. (except gnome look in my other topic for that... :? )

Thanks everybody!
