I'm having problems getting my lombard powerbook (333) to boot from any bootable CD (Gentoo, Mac OS X, Tech Tool Pro, YDL 3, YDL 4).

I'm holding down the C key during boot (which works on every other mac I've used) but the machine just boots into OS 8.5 after spinning up the DVD (in the right media bay).

So far I've tried:

- changing the boot volume in Mac OS (both using the control panel and OS X installer)

- zapping the pram (cmd+opt+p+r at boot) which seems to work (i.e. it chimes and reboots a few times).

- reseting the PMU using the reset switch in the back

- disconnecting the backup battery and repeating all of above

So now I've resorted to using bootX and the initial ram disk off the live CD to try and boot the installer from OS 8.5. I can get the kernel to boot, but either fails to mount devfs or can't find init (the usual "I can't find the root partition" problems), despite passing in root=/dev/hdd (which seems to be what the DVD drive gets detected as).

Any ideas of other things to try?

thanks,

Andy

if that doesn't help, dig around in here:

as this sort of thing has popped up many times before. Worst case scenario, d/l an older cd and boot from that and then emerge -uD

Thanks for the suggestions. Although I had searched a number of forums, mailing lists fairly extensively, not to mention several hours of googling, I hadn't turned up that first thread.
