I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on the current status of the 2D/3D accleration for the ATI chip in my 15" aluminum pb ( 1280x854 2003 model ).

Currently I run Linux ( 2.6.9-gentoo-r8 ) and xorg ( 6.8.0-r3 ) using the radeon fb kernel driver. I don't have x11-drm installed.

From what I can tell, there is a project to reverse engineer the windows DX9 drivers in order to create a Linux driver for the chip. The web page is here: http://r300.sourceforge.net This project is in the very hacky phase.

I'm wondering if someone knows more about this than I do.

Dave

Hey MiniMoose (Polecats rock!)

No, there isn't really any support for the r300 series of chips. The project you've linked to is the start of a reverse engineered drm driver that will eventually be part of the DRI drivers. As far as I know, the changes included in the r300 project are in the DRI / Mesa CVS repositories and really only support basic 2D accelleration.

Try it out and let us know how it works. :)

I'll get the latest CVS snap and do a little beta testing. What would be a good 2D test? Wesnoth? Will SDL apps use mesa for rendering?
