Does anybody else experience random segfaults in the compiler during emerges in an xterm window while in X? I've experienced several times where large emerge updgrades fail repeatedly if I am in X windows while emerge is running. As soon as I exit X out to the console and do the emerge there, everything is fine.

I suspect it may be a RAM/Swap issue, but I've got 512MB of RAM and 1GB of swap.

Kernel preemption enabled in your kernel maybe? Looks like the most common symptom of this one.

I have the same prolem with all of my Mac (PowerMac G4@450 AGP2x, PoerBook G3@500 Bronze kb, PowerBook G4@1500 Alu).
Most of the time compiling ends up with error in X, but without X there are no errors... It is a PPC only feature? 8O
I have no problems with my i386 machines.

silian87: I do have preemtion enabled. So that can cause the problem? I will try to disable it with 2.6.9-r9 (just emerging it).
Can the preemtion cause the pbbuttonsd crash while I'm rebooting/halting my laptop?

I assumed that the preemption on PPC is as safe as it is on x86...

Thanks, I will post if it solves the problem.

Hello,
I have removed the preemption from the kernel. Now I can compile/emerge. Even in X.

Thanks for the hint.
