I had this problem for ages and ages, I posted a thread in networking but no-one could figure it out.

Whenever I would ssh into my box from the internet, it would hang after asking me for my password. It opened the interactive session on the server, but it never got to the client.

I have the solution! :)

Turns out that for some reason the output packets are set to TOS "Minimize delay", which breaks ssh, telnet and ftp sessions through the modem. You therefore need an iptables rule to mangle output packets tos to "normal service". The rule you need is:

Code:
iptables --table mangle --append OUTPUT --jump DSCP --set-dscp 0x0

Hope this helps someone.

hi,
i am new to gentoo
but on the liveCD boot screen it says you can start a ssh
session change the root password and login from another
computer well half way through the install i decided to do this
walking across the building was getting tiring
did the init...sshd start thing
generated some keys and off i went, i thought
now when i try to start sshd i get the error:
/sbin/runscript.sh:line32: /var/lib/init.d/softlevel:no such file or directory
when i try to login from the other machine i get past the
password prompt and the session hangs no prompt just ablinking nonfunctional cursor the gentoo box i am trying to see tells me
that root has started a session
oh yeah this is on a lan with the liveCD

when i do killall sshd i get "no processes killed"
so how do i kill the sshd daemon?

Yes, thank you. D-LINK DSL-504T here.

For my benefit in case I need to look this up again, I needed to enable the following in my kernel to get iptables to work. Not sure if all of them are required but this setup works so I'll stick with it.

Code:

Device Drivers  --->
    Networking support  --->
        Networking options  --->
            [*] Network packet filtering (replaces ipchains)  --->
                IP: Netfilter Configuration  --->
                    <*> IP tables support (required for filtering/masq/NAT)
                    <*> Packet mangling
                    <*>   TOS target support
                    <*>   DSCP target support
