I've been looking for a quick solution to streaming my music from home without all of the messy and complicated configuration of icecast. Today I stumbled upon edna , which allows you to quickly stream your music to any other networked computer. You don't need to run apache, you don't need to spend lots of time configuring it, it does almost all of the work for you.

The install takes about 30 seconds

Code:

emerge edna
emacs /etc/edna/edna.conf

in edna.conf you need to change a couple settings:
you need to specify what port it is to run on and where your music is.
Code:
port = 12345
dir1 = /mnt/music
dir2 = /mnt/moremusic

close emacs and
Code:
/etc/init.d/edna start

now all you need to do is fire up your favorite browser to yourhost:12345 and click on the music you want to play. Voila, 30 seconds to streaming audio, works perfectly over my 10kbps dsl connection (upstream), it does ogg vorbis too if your media player can handle it.

other settings you can specify is user-based authentication (uses clear text passwords :(), some display options, the ability to show ID3 information (big performance hit, espc if music is all in one big directory), and some log output options
hopefully someone will enjoy this :)

I just wanted to let you know enda is in portage. So you can just "emerge edna" then modify /etc/edna/edna.conf and, as root, run /etc/init.d/edna start to get it all up and running.

Just to let ya know, icecast doesn't require apache to be installed or running. Although it is a great deal more difficult to setup (compared to above).
