A friend of mine bought a 400MHz G3 and gave it to me to fix a few stickey keys. He said I can keep it as long as I like because he's just going to sell it when I give it back.

Sooo, since I find the OS X interface about as intuitive as Windows 98, and I want to make the most out of having a laptop for a month or so, I'm putting Gentoo on it.

My only concern is the mouse buttons, or lack thereof. Will I be able to get stuff done by combining the the little apple key and a mouse click as a right/middle click? Anyone here installed Gentoo on a G3?

The answer to your question ( and many others about installing gentoo on mac hardware) lies in the gentoo-ppc-faq.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#doc_chap2

Quote:
There is no way to get ctrl-button, like on Mac OS X, working. But you can map quite any key or combination of keys to emulate the second and third mouse-button.

They provide and example for using F11 and F12 as your middle and right buttons, which I have been using for more than a year now. Of course, most of the time I just plug in a USB mouse with all the buttons I need.

I use F10 and F11 for middle and right click. It might seem inconvenient but I actually got used to it recently and I am using less my 3-button USB mouse now...

All was well until about the third thing in emerge system (no stage 1 install apparently). It froze on unpacking bzip2 I think. I had to remove the battery to get it off, then I started back up and tried it again, froze while compile something...

I think it's overheating and I'm going to take it apart since I have to clean the keyboard anyway...

Right, well it's all fixed up. It was overheating, compiling away now. I did have it booting, but a PAM error kept me from logging in, so I just booted to the livecd and I'm having it compile the whole system (instead of the stage 3 packages).
