H

I have lost many hours of sleep trying to get this xorg thing going. I did a bit of reading and saw that there are "some" issues with Radeon and xorg. I see that the xfree packages are masked for PPC,.... is xfree going bye bye and should I forget about it.?

when I try to startx I get

XXXX module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved

Question is ...
should this be able to work (should I spend more time on this)
or should I rather try to get xfree installed (I had this runnig in the past no problem)

System:
G4 TiBook 15"
1,0G 512mb
2004.3
xorg 6.8.0-r3
kernel 2.6.9 r9

thanks in advance

XFree is no longer supported, you should use X.org. From the error, it looks like you didn't compile dri support into your kernel, make sure that you've done that. Also, you can try using Xautoconfig, which should set up you X configuration automatically for you.

Good luck!

Heya,

I'm using Xorg fairly stable on the same TiBook configuration. Let me know if you need any config files from me... It works, definately. The only issues I had were with the introduction of 6.8.0 and the hardware rendering. If you disable all those options, then Xautoconf should create you a fine and working config file.

Hmm, I read about some issues of udev and X11 yesterday, but didn't follow up on them yet...

Cheers,
Jens

H

Great thanks, good to hear that it works, I was only reading a lot of bad stuff about it.
Think I will go check my kernel again.
Know this is not the post to talk about udev but I just got to add, I tried twice with udev, ext2 and 3 file systems but no joy, superblock errors... emerged defsd and bingo.

I hear the kernel is calling. ...... will let you know if it worked.

Thanks

I just spoke to the kernel and was advised that he knows about DRI support.
I even compiled the kernel without to see what it does, but then it didn't boot up at all
Here are 2 parts from my .config file, I think this is how it should be, if not please let me know.
I will emerge xeasyconf a bit later today when I get back home again, maybe that will also help.

xautoconfig got me a semi working config, as soon as it starts up it freezes :-(
I changed my config a bit to look more like the one I had with YDL installed but still no joy
Hz 30-100
Vz 50-60
depth 24 1152x864
_savage do you also have "fbdev" as a driver for the video card ?
I tried changing it to "ati" and "radeon" but then X doesn't even want to start up

A what? :-D fbdev? Dunno. I'm using udev after I got rid of devfs, but woth were working fine from the start. These are snippets from my xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Module"
        Load            "dbe"
        Load            "type1"
        # Load          "speedo"
        Load            "freetype"
        # Load          "xtt"
        Load            "glx"
        Load            "dri"

        SubSection "extmod"
                Option  "omit xfree86-dga"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

...

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Flatpanel"
        HorizSync       31.5 - 48.5
        VertRefresh     50-70
        Option          "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Card0"
        Driver          "radeon"
        Option          "UseFBDev"
        Option          "AGPMode" "4"
        Option          "EnablePageFlip" "true"
        Option          "DynamicClocks" "true"
        Option          "RenderAccel" "false"
        Option          "backingstore" "true"
        Driver          "radeon"
        VendorName      "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName       "Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]"
        BusID           "PCI:0:16:0"
EndSection

If this helps at all?
Jens

Use FBDev or your TiBook's X will crash upon waking from sleep.

The latest version of xorg (6.8.1.901) better supports r128 and radeon on ppc, including removing the dependency on UseFBDev. There are lots of other fixes as well, give it a try.

I see there is some talk about FBDev etc, will go try them out also.

groen,

your screen size is 1280 x 854 pixels, not 1152 x something.
Also, I have the same rev TiBook as you (the 867mhz one, whereas yours is the 1ghz one) and we have basically the exact same hardware. The xorg.conf shoud thus work as well for you as it does for me. That said, I'm not using the absolute latest version as you no doubt are. Check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or whatever it's called) to see what the errors are in trying to start it with my xorg.conf.

I have FBDev turned on in that xorg.conf I posted.

I'm using the latest Xorg on a 1G TiBook, and it's working most excellent.

Groen, what are your USE flags, make config etc? Perhaps your compiler screws Xorg up?

Cheers,
Jens

BINGO

Just finished moving some stuff to a new apartment, had a nice cold wisky.... and then I just could not resist looking my kernel config. In about 30 mins my X was running .....

It had to do with the graphics "frame buffer" ... I still have some "unresolved libs" but that's no biggy.
I will do a bit of sdiff 'ing later and let you know what the excact problem was.

Thanks everyone for the help.

I have a TiBook IV 1.0 GHz, and I JUST (re)installed x.org on it, and everything works just perfectly...

Even dri works correctly - glxgears gives me around 2000 fps... which is even better than Apple's X11 gives me in OS X.

Linux on my TiBook is with almost EVERYTHING much faster than OS-X. Guess why I'm using Gentoo, and not OS-X. I don't need pretty, I need power ;-)

This is what I changed in my kernel config to get my X working:

#
# Graphics support
#
CONFIG_FB_OF=y changed this to "n"

#
# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y changed this to "n"

I still have to change a few things to get dri running but at least now I can have a pretty display when I want it :-)
As far as speed goes, oh yea, Gentoo is a lot faster than my osX, like _savage said "I don't need pretty, I need power"

thanks again everyone

Well obviously "pretty" is a rather subjective term. My Linux isn't :-) But perhaps my definition of "pretty" is different to yours?
