I'm trying to get a modem to work so I can send/receive faxes using Hylafax. I've already emerges hylafax and now I'm trying to configure it, but when it goes through faxaddmodem, it fails to find the modem. The modem is connected on the modem port and when prompted, I enter ttyS0 as the device. When faxaddmodem tries to detect the modem, it says:
Probing for best speed to talk to modem:
Unable to deduce DTE-DCE speed; check that you are using the
correct device and/or that your modem is setup properly. If
all else fails, try the -s option to lock the speed.
If I cat /dev/ttyS0 I get an input/output error.

To be honest, I'm not sure that I have all the kernel support required for serial communications, this is what I set in the kernel config:
<*> 8250/16550 and compatible serial support x x
x x [ ] Console on 8250/16550 and compatible serial port x x
x x (4) Maximum number of non-legacy 8250/16550 serial ports x x
x x [ ] Extended 8250/16550 serial driver options x x
x x --- Non-8250 serial port support x x
x x <*> PowerMac z85c30 ESCC support x x
x x [ ] Console on PowerMac z85c30 serial port

I don't think I need PPP support for faxing, so that stuff's not enabled. Any ideas?

wait, do you even have the device there? what does dmesg tell you when you connect it?

maybe try adding the options (ive set up a modem on an old world computer, but not for faxing, so im not sure how much good i will do)

I had some problems locating the serial ports on my wallstreet. Check out: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=16070&highlight=modem

Thanks for the pointer. I finally figured it out. I had both serial driver options enabled in the kernel. The 8250, which I guess is the PC serial driver, was loading and not allowing the PMACZILOG serial driver to load. I've rebuilt the kernel without the 8250 and its working now.
Thanks again.
