I'm trying to get ALSA working on this Mac. First, some relevant system specs:

iMac Rev A, G3-233, 96MB RAM
Kernel 2.6.10 (development-sources)

Everything compiles fine, the modules load without any errors in syslog or dmesg, but I don't get any sound, nor can I adjust the mixer using alsamixer or amixer - the sliders are all locked in their position. I've read that this can have something to do with I2C support, but I've compiled i2c_core and i2c_keywest, and loaded both.

I've tried:
ALSA 1.0.6 (Comes with the kernel)
ALSA 1.0.7 (I installed this with the following command: ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" emerge alsa-drivers alsa-headers alsa-utils)

The dmasound_pmac module works, but I'd much prefer to have ALSA working rather than OSS, since my other boxes all use ALSA, and that's what I'm most familiar with. Here's the relevant system files:

/etc/modules.d/alsa:
Code:

alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-powermac
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

options snd cards_limit=1

lsmod:
Code:

Module                  Size  Used by
snd_powermac           43424  0
snd_pcm               110136  1 snd_powermac
snd_timer              28004  1 snd_pcm
snd                    67188  3 snd_powermac,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc         10852  1 snd_pcm
i2c_keywest            11428  0
i2c_core               26704  2 snd_powermac,i2c_keywest

Any idea what I should try next?

Hello

I haven´t a solution, but a question. Have you tested headphones and line-out?

I have the same spec i harware, but i have installed ubuntu.

No sound in the internal speakers, but sound in the headphones, and if a plug in a cable in line-out (the plug beside usb) the sound comes in the internal speakers. And if a plug in headphone in the other front jack I got sound in the internal speakers and in the headphone.

If you also get the same, could you report this?

I have posted my question att ubuntu:

I just built out Gentoo on a revision C iMac, with the same versions, and I have exactly the same problem, amixer and alsamixer just won't let me adjust volume or unmute. Is there a problem with the burgundy driver with alsa?

I have got the internal speaker working, se my post at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=9484.

But its a drag, it's something about alsa and burgundy I think.

I cant´t find burgundy in the matrice of soundcards at ALSA, for further tests.
