Here's an update on the problem,

After much messing about, I ran artsd from the command line, and I got the following output:

ALSA pcm_hw.c:549(snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe

Repeated twice.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Thanks,

M.

Hello all,

I just completely built a kde-based system in my old iBook G3 300Mhz. Unfortunately, sound was the last thing I decided to sort out.

I've built the kernel with ALSA support included:

Sound card support
ALSA enabled
PowerMac ALSA driver
PowerMac DMA sound support disabled

Now, sound works perectly from the console (mpg123 and mplayer all play perfectly). However, I built kde without the "alsa" keyword in my USE variable. Sound does not work at all in kde. When I try to change the sound options in the control center, the only option I get is auto-detect, which detects nothing. I put the alsa keyword into my USE variable and recompiled kdebase, but to no effect.

Can anyone give some advice on the problem? It is bizarre, no sound from kde, but I can run mplayer perfectly in kde! (mplayer was compiled with alsa support). Do I need to recompile qt, or another package such as kde-multimedia? Damn frustrating, as everything else on the new system works like a charm!

M.

check to make sure your computer is mixing audio correctly... cause maybe kde alerts or whatever has hijacked the single source of audio, and then nothing else will work...

You need to recompile arts.

Same problem here but with an AMD64. I've reviewed lots of messages on this issue but has not found solution yet.

I have added 'arts' to my USE on make.conf, I have re-emerged kdelibs, kdemultimedia and arts without success neither, I have edited also that configuration file -which name I cannot remember now- that some messages say to put some values that are true by default to false instead, and I still not have sound under kde with arts.

Other sound programs like alsaplayer or mp3blaster works fine, I have only troubles with artsd.

BTW, this is my alsa output when trying to run artsd:

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:563:(snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:563:(snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe

I get sound working under KDE. But there are many skips.
The only way I could overcome it is to give a very big buffer to arts.
It's still throwing the annoying messages.......
But it works.
I've re-emerged arts 3 times...still the same problem
BTW: MIDI doesn't work. maybe it's somehow related...
