I use Gentoo on all my Intel boxes and recently bought and dual-booted an iBook G4 for travelling - it's pretty has a long battery life etc...

No problems with getting sound, X, etc. to work thanks to the excellent handbook and the quality of the posts to this forum. (Flattery will get you anywhere - :D ).

And it's a useful little beast that appears to run about twice as fast in Gentoo than OS X...

...However I've spent far more time than I should on the keyboard mapping. The Mac keyboard confuses my ancient synapse bundles because the keys (#@" etc.) are in the wrong place (great design decision huh?). Much messing with Ukelele put them back in the right place (UK layout) in OS X and the gentoo boot had them in the correct place by default.

However my Emacs work is crippled because I can't for the life of me figure out how to map the emacs Meta key to the left Apple key - which is where my muscles remember it to be.

Does anyone have the settings for a) console and b) X mode for the UK Mac keyboard of this? These are two seperate mappings of course. I'm running the latest version of xorg and I've tried googling and fiddling with the keymaps and xorg.conf but no luck and my blood pressure is rising...

You can use the showkey command to get the keycode of your button (125) under console and then add it to: /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/uk.map.gz (i.e. keycode 125 = AltGr)

You can do the same thing with xev, editing /etc/X11/xkb/keycodes/xfree86 under X

Thanks a million, neon_it.

It's a black day for tobacco users in Italy, apparently. We banned smoking in public places recently in Ireland and it's worked pretty well, despite the climate. Now pubs have kind of lean-to sheds on the side which are officially "outside" where smokers go to indulge their habit. All the craic's out there, they say, but I'd prefer to stay warm :)

The good news is that I have console mode goikng - thanks to your hints.

For future reference - anyone who needs to map the meta key to the apple key on a UK keyboard ibook G4 1.2G - here's my /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/uk.map

Code:

# uk.map
# From bam@wcl-l.bham.ac.uk Fri May  2 20:20:59 1997
# reduced number of keymaps, adapted to alt_is_meta - aeb
#
# old: shift keycode 41 = asciitilde
# bam: shift keycode 41 = notsign
#
keymaps 0-2,4-6,8,9,12
alt_is_meta
include "qwerty-layout"
include "linux-with-alt-and-altgr"
strings as usual

keycode   1 = Escape
keycode   2 = one              exclam
keycode   3 = two              quotedbl         at               nul
keycode   4 = three            sterling
   control   keycode   4 = Escape
keycode   5 = four             dollar           dollar           Control_backslash
keycode   6 = five             percent
   control   keycode   6 = Control_bracketright
keycode   7 = six              asciicircum
   control   keycode   7 = Control_asciicircum
keycode   8 = seven            ampersand        braceleft        Control_underscore
keycode   9 = eight            asterisk         bracketleft      Delete
keycode  10 = nine             parenleft        bracketright
keycode  11 = zero             parenright       braceright
#   alt   keycode  11 = Meta_parenright
keycode  12 = minus            underscore       backslash        Control_underscore
keycode  13 = equal            plus
keycode  14 = Delete
   control   keycode  14 = Control_underscore
keycode  15 = Tab
keycode  26 = bracketleft      braceleft
   control   keycode  26 = Escape
keycode  27 = bracketright     braceright       asciitilde       Control_bracketright
keycode  28 = Return
   alt   keycode  28 = Meta_Control_m
keycode  29 = Control
keycode  39 = semicolon        colon
keycode  40 = apostrophe       at
   control   keycode  40 = Control_g
shift   control   keycode  40 = nul
keycode  41 = grave            notsign          bar              nul
keycode  42 = Shift
keycode  43 = numbersign       asciitilde
   control   keycode  43 = Control_backslash
keycode  51 = comma            less
keycode  52 = period           greater
keycode  53 = slash            question
   control   keycode  53 = Delete
keycode  54 = Shift
keycode  56 = Alt
keycode  57 = space
   control   keycode  57 = nul
keycode  58 = Caps_Lock
keycode  86 = backslash        bar              bar              Control_backslash
keycode  125 = Alt
keycode  97 = Control

Xemacs only works with the Alt key (not the Meta) key - I seems to still have problems here related to xorg, xkb and possibly the window manager (icewm - it may Ibe primitive but I keep coming back to it :) ) I'll post more if I get is sorted.

Thanks again...

Fortunately I'm not a tobacco addict. By the way i think that here in Sicily the temperature is more comfortable than in Ireland (even in winter).
