I'm a big fan of gentoo for my server installations and I recently purchased a 1.5GHz powerbook (NO COMPLAINTS!) I'm itching to stick gentoo on this thing again, I'd especially like to use it get into VJing... I'd like to know if anyone has had any success with the video-out on the powerbooks. If so, if anyone has used them in a gentoo configuration to do live video work.

Many thanks!

Success here (Tibook rev III, Radeon M7) with Xorg 6.8.0-r3 patched as per this thread and this. The display mirrors alright to the external DVI connector using the meta modes declared in the Device section which ends up being like this:
Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier  "RadeonMerged"
        Driver      "radeon"

        Option      "AGPMode"  "4"
        Option      "AGPFastWrite" "true"
        Option      "EnablePageFlip" "true"
        Option      "RenderAccel" "true"
        Option      "backingstore"

        Option      "UseFWPLL" "true"
        Option      "MergedFB" "true"
        Option      "CRT2Position" "Clone"
        Option      "MetaModes" "1152x864 1024x768 800x600"
     ## can we replace MetaModes like this?
     #  Option "CloneMode" "1024x768"
        Option      "CRT2HSync" "30-100"
        Option      "CRT2VRefresh" "50-100"
        Option      "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,CRT"
EndSection

As you can see from the comments I am still trying things out, but the basic functionality is there (the pesky UseFBDev is no longer needed which makes all the difference in the world). This is just perfect for driving a data projector (which is my use of the video-out connector) but will also try Xinerama at some time (hopefully soon).

By the way, rumours have it that the mentioned patches are included in the newer Xorg, could somebody please confirm this.

Ooops, now that I think a bit I realize that you probably refer to the S-Video output on the Powerbook. I have no experience with this one, so sorry for the possibly off-topic post.

Even if this Thread is very old, it was pretty new to me that s-video works with xrandr (800x600 res. and in clonemode only :-( ) on my powerbook.
For some reason i have to plugin my projector before booting the Os.
Than i run:
Code:
xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1

xrandr --output S-video --set tv_standard pal

xrandr --addmode S-video 800x600

xrandr --output S-video --mode 800x600

To watch videos with mplayer or xine using the xv-driver i had to run:
Code:
xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 1

This is because the xv-output can only be used on one Display.
To swtich back run
Code:
xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 0

I'm still trying to make the video go fullscreen on the second Display, but all i can do by now is to resize the Windowsize manually on Display 0 and make it fit that Way.
