I have an old beige G3 266 with a 40G ide drive with 3 partitions. mac osx.2 server on one 4G partition, mac osx.3 on another 4G partition, and the remaining just waiting for Gentoo. I had mac os 8.5 on it and I used bootx to boot into the Gentoo 2004.3 ppc disc, but can I use BootX in OSX? I had to use xpostfacto to install osx.3 on it since only x.2 is officially supported. I'm afraid to just throw BootX on it becuase I read that xpostfacto uses a modified version of bootx to install osx.
Any suggestions on how to get Gentoo on this box?

BootX only works on OldWorld Mac. You should use yaboot instead. For additional information on yaboot, please refer to http://penguinppc.org/bootloaders/yaboot/

Quote:
It should be noted that BootX became difficult to maintain, and new machines are supported only by yaboot. Owners of Blue & White G3's and later MUST use yaboot, BootX is incompatible with New World Macintosh.

This is an old world mac. That's why I was asking. I wish I could use Yaboot.

I'd be trying it with a spare hard drive first if there's anything precious on it. I know how much hoop-jumping is necessary for this sort of thing.

I have x.2 on a near identical machine that I can test bootx compatiblilty with if you want, but I've no idea as to the bootx/xpostfacto interoperability.

I have an extra hd, but I'm not reallly worried about losing anything on my current hard drive. It's all a fresh setup and I don't have any important data to lose. I just got this machine a couple of months ago to play around with. I'm also kind of using it as an extra machine to use while my main machine is doing long compiles.
Anyway ..., In mac os8.5 I just dropped BootX in the system folder and created a kernels folder. I notice in osX the system folder looks a little empty, so I'm not sure if I need to do things differently in osX to get BootX to work. Also, in os8.5 there was a graphical utility to see what services (extensions) were running at boot etc. I can't find this utiitly in osx, so I'm not sure how to activate BootX in osX. Since ppc is new to me, I thought I would ask the experts here in the forum.

Have you installed the Classic Environment? In my other Mac that runs OSX, the system folder for the classic environment is not empty at all. In fact, it is pretty much the same old system folder with only a few modifications.

On the other hand, you should be able to select the services that the Classic Environment will run under Extensions in Control Panel. You would have to set your Classic Environment option in OSX to run services listed in Extension though.

However, I don't think it is a good idea to run Gentoo under the Classic Environment because OSX would occupy many resources. Do you have OS8/9 installed as well? In that case, you can simply boot from OS8/9 by setting the proper "system folder in startup disk".

I don't have os 8 or 9 on it. I bought the machine and it had 8.5 on it and it didn't come with a cd. I messed up the os and did a clean install of osx.2 server. I searched online and found os 8.5 for around $40, but I can't see spending that just so I can boot into linux. There has to be a way without os 8 or 9.
