i'm trying to install gentoo from the 2004.3 universal live cd on an iMac G3 "Indigo" (PowerPC G3 400 MHz).
after the live cd boots i first tried to configure the network using net-setup, but got no pings to or from the other computers in my lan.
ifconfig gives an output of:

Code:

Link encap:UNSPEC
inet addr:192.168.0.2 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:150 Metric:1

the ip settings are correct and work fine with OS X
i suspect the UNSPEC part hints that the network card is unrecognized. is that the case?

btw, `uname -r` returns "2.6.9-gentoo-r1-g4", although i loaded the G3 kernel. is that a problem?

thanks

Code:

0001:10:13.0 Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21142/43 (rev 41)

That DEC network card should work with the tulip module. Try
Code:
 # modprobe tulip
before you configure your network.

Hi JoseJX,

I tried to install gentoo both from universal and minimal 2005.0 cds, on an iMac G3 (PowerPC G3 400 MHz).
after the live cd boots i first tried to configure my office network, Unix, Linux, Win98, WinXP ad a Cisco router, using net-setup and an IPaddress, but got no pings to or from the other computers in my lan.

Now I am working with a iMac G5 (192.168.0.108) crosslinked with G3 (192.168.0.109) on my home network, with an 2005.0 minimal livecd.

The boot is made with only the G3 option

I see a difference in 2005.0 universal

etc/conf.d/net :

Code:

ifconfig_eth0="dhpc"
ifconfig_eth1="dhpc"
ifconfig_eth2="dhpc"
ifconfig_eth3="dhpc"
ifconfig_eth4="dhpc"

from from the 2005.0 minimal livecd

Code:

iface_eth0="dhpc"
iface_eth1="dhpc"
iface_eth2="dhpc"
iface_eth3="dhpc"
iface_eth4="dhpc"

about tulip, while sistem is booting I see:

Code:

*Coldplugging pci devices.....
/etc/hotplug/pci.agent: line 155:   3066 Segmentation fault    $MODPROBE $MODULE >/dev/null 2>&1
... can't load module tulip

lsmod gives
Code:

Module            Size  Used by
eth1394        22440   0
tulip              55728   1
ohci1394       37860   0
ieee1394     122224   2 eth1394,ohci1394

the command
Code:

#modprobe tulip

gives nothing back,
after net-setup eth0, ifconfig eth0 gives:
Code:

Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-0A-27-FF-FE-83-9F-6E-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
inet addr:192.168.0.109 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0  carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

after a ping to 192.168.0.108 (iMac G5) and a Destination Host Unreachable I see ping statistics:
Code:

7 packets transmitted, 0 received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 6001 ms, pipe 3

ifconfig eth0 gives:

Code:

Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-0A-27-FF-FE-83-9F-6E-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
inet addr:192.168.0.109 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0  carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:216 (216.0 b)

lsmod gives
Code:

Module            Size  Used by
eth1394        22440   0
tulip              55728   1
ohci1394       37860   0
ieee1394     122224   2 eth1394,ohci1394

thanks

Can you give me the last 30 lines of output from dmesg on a boot where it segfaults?
