If these are really your very first steps with linux, you might want to try YellowDog linux first.

But if you think you can handle it, you better start with the full installation disks (2 CDs) and get everything up and running from the CD's:
Start a stage-3 installation, following the manual.
Skip the network installation stuff.
Before the manual tells you to chroot to the gentoo partition, you have to unzip the portage-snapshot which you can find on the first CD.:
Code:
# cd /mounted_gentoo_partition/usr && tar jxvf /mnt/cdrom/snapshots/portage-whatever.tar.bz2

This provides you with a package database that corresponds with the packages on the second CD, so you don't have to 'rsync' like the manual will tell you later.
The first CD also has sources for the kernel and other critical packages aboard:
Code:
# mkdir /mounted_gentoo_partition/usr/portage/distfiles
# mount -o bind /mnt/cdrom/distfiles /mounted_gentoo_partition/usr/portage/distfiles

Now you can chroot to your gentoo partition. and finish the basic installation. Make sure you use the 'development-sources' (2.6.x) as kernel sources since these are the ones that are provided on the CD.

Once you have a basic gentoo installation that can boot on it's own from your harddisk, you can use the precompiled packages on the second CD to install the rest of your system:
Code:
# mount /dev/hdX /usr/portage/packages
# emerge -vp --usepkg whatever-package-on-the-CD

AFAIK, there is no linux support for the built in modem (at least, not for my powerbooks' modem). Also, USB modems are pretty tricky to set up, if there is any support at all for your model. What works best is a standalone DSL-router.

Thank You--
I've downloaded the snapshot & the stage 3 for the G4--I have the 2-disc DVD set on my desk--Am burning the .tar(s) to a cd as I type this--I looked at most of the flavors of Linux out there & was impressed by the depth of docs that Gentoo has--I was part of the Beta team for OS X (10.02/03/04) & the early Beta effort of Ryan's to boot OS X on "old world" Mac---I like to know what is "going on", so I went this way---maybe I'm a sucker for punishment :) --

I maybe a old dog---but I think that I can still learn new tricks---

I copied you info---MANY THANKS!!!

Dean

The two DVD set only has install for PC--wouldn't boot my Mac at all --so I downloaded the min install & made my own install set--took three cd drives--the two DVDs in the box & a USB 2 external that I could mount as /mnt/cdroms/cdrom2 got as far as getting the kernel emerged & ran into a file-system error-- --know where I went wrong--used Drive-set-up in 10.3 then booted into Gentoo--I'll zero the drive & redo in Gentoo this next time--running 4 drives in the case--have devoted a 80G seagate to this set-up.

Thanks for the Info again--question--could it have caused a owner permission problem? I got a file-system error & was told I couldn't write to the file--

Dean

DVD? There are 2 CD's with the most used packages on it:

gentoo/releases/ppc/2004.3/livecd/install-ppc-universal-2004.3.iso
gentoo/releases/ppc/2004.3/packagecd/packages-ppc-2004.3.iso

These work fine on my powerbook.

Wouter ;-)

Yes-the box set that was delivered to me is labeled "Gentoo Linux/2004.3 /x86/DVR+R---I know that it's a PC set--I asked for PPC & got PC  --So I made my own install set & am using the distfiles from the first disc & extra programs from the second disc---Don't want to E Gentoo & "pitch a bitch"--I'm smart enough to set up a install set & I know that my $35US will help development--Besides, a challenge to do it the "hard" way is one I can't resist---

I got my Guinness in front of me & I'm ready to pound keys----

Later!!!
