My aim was to export from Evolution to SquirrelMail, but this works for Thunderbird as well.

There is a bit about this in on the forum but none of the solutions seem to be ideal. This looked promising until I realised it used Kaddressbook (I am a KDE free zone).

Evolution will export its entire address book in to Vcard format (select all and export to Vcard), but Thunderbird and SquirrelMail (with a plug-in) will only import LDIF format. So all you need is a script to convert between the two formats. The scrip I found is vcard2ldif, but there are others around.

Initially I imported the LDIF file straight into SquirrelMail, it worked but needed quite a bit of hand editing. A lot of the editing may have been necessary because my address book has been imported from Outlook to Evolution via Outport and not all the data is in the correct fields, so you may not have the same problem.

Since I had a lot of editing to do, mostly putting things in the correct fields I imported the LDIF file in to Thunderbird to do the editing then exported back out to a new LDIF file before importing into SquirrelMail, this was a lot cleaner.
