I am mostly writing this for myself, for next time i manage to blow away my config and cant remember how to set it up again.
1. Install the ebuild from https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=192705
2. symlink the ut2004 openal.so to the one included with above package
3. for my .openalrc i have this:
Code:
(define devices '(alsa native))
(define alsa-device "surround40:0,0")
(define speaker-num 4)

4. (This bit confused me for about 2 days) make a file called .openal-speakers with the following:
Code:
0: 1 -0.70710678 0 0.70710678
1: 1 0.70710678 0 0.70710678
2: 1 -0.70710678 0 -0.70710678
3: 1 0.70710678 0 -0.70710678
4: 0 0 0 0
5: 0 0 0 0
6: 0 0 0 0
7: 0 0 0 0

I had originally called this file ".openal-opeakers" and i blame that on the qwerty layout trying to sneak back.
5. run alsamixer (or kmix or whatever) and turn up the volume on the channel called "Surround"; this one controls the rear volume. "Wave surround" channel just seems to mirror the front speakers.

I hope that's useful to someone.

FirechilD - Try changing (define speaker-num 4) to (define speaker-num 5), then change 4: 0 0 0 0 to 4: 1 0 0 1 (I'm just guessing this will work, i don't have 5 speakers.)

brenden - i'm using amd64 as well :) so... no. Are you using the openal 3d accelerated version?

Hullo there - is it possible to get surround sound with non-emu10k1 drivers? I have an onboard nvidia AC'97 chipset for 7.1 sound, but that link only appears to be for people with fancy SoundBlaster stuff...
