I just bought a new HP deskjet 5740 printer. It works fine with the hpijs driver. However, there appears to be no way of finding out the ink levels.

I think I have some success. I added to my /etc/portage/package.keyword
Code:

sys-libs/libieee1284 ~ppc
net-print/libinklevel ~ppc
net-print/kink ~ppc

Note - I had to then go into each one of the above packages and manually add the keyword "~ppc". Since it was missing. Then I just emerged "kink" (for KDE) and it pulled in all the others packages.

Then I
Code:
chmod 666 /dev/usb/lp0
I think you can do via sudo also for the kink. I hope it isn't a security risk ?

I Started kink via command line I got a graphical interface showing the ink levels. You can look in /usr/portage/net-print where there other ink level reporting packages (eg net-print/ink - command line version of kink).

Can anybody say why the keyword ppc/~ppc were missing to the above packages ?

Okay since this is the first time I have done such things as adding ~ppc to an ebuild. Did I do it in the correct manner?
Also assuming this works after a month who do I inform so that the ppc/~ppc gets added to the above packages ?

The package versions I emerged:
Code:
emerge -p sys-libs/libieee1284 net-print/libinklevel net-print/kink

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] sys-libs/libieee1284-0.2.8
[ebuild   R   ] net-print/libinklevel-0.6.3
[ebuild   R   ] net-print/kink-0.2.1

Has anybody done this another way ?

The reason why there wasn't a ppc or ~ppc is that those packages haven't been tested by a ppc dev. In the future, make a bug when you find a package that can be marked ~ppc. I'll take care of marking these ~ppc for you.

Thanks!
