I've managed to make vga out work with my iBook 1,2ghz 12".

You can find an exaustive explanation here:
Linux On Ibook G4 Howto

I can't use both 3D acceleration and VGA out, but I'm happy because I never use them together, and the switch to one configuration to other is quite simple. If you can help me with that, I would be happier, so please contact me.

I can also use the spanning screens, with the spanning patch, as in powerbooks (one screen left of another).
It's great!

Thanks to all helped me.

The spanning patch is only required if you use OS X. I have never applied the spanning patch, and I have MergedFB working fine with pseudo-xinerama on my iBook G4 1GHz.

If you like, you can call this a benefit of Free Software, that our video drivers are not arbitrarily limited just to make PowerBooks look more attractive. :)

Thanks for your infos,
got xinerama working on xorg 6.8.2 (by just using the xinerama xorg.conf) on my 12" ibook. MergedFB is not working on my book and config yet, but i am quite happy with xinerama. Now i can do my presentations (i am a teacher) on my gentoo ibook (thats quite a booster for spreading the gnu word  - gentoo ibook is already rising a lot of interest in gnu&linux around peers and parents)
regards
ralph

Hello,

It is not quite working for me.

I used your xorg.conf.dual and xorg.conf.merged files, with the same results.

In both cases I have the screen displayed on the external monitor.

But :
1- the laptop TFT screen image is flickering (like it would be out of sync, but there is no sync on TFT, no ?).
2 -fonts are smaller than whan in single screen mode.

Have you by chance meet this problem and have a solution ?

Edit : I use 6.8.2. Does this version have the required patches ? Because it seems that the flickering LCD is corrected by a patch.

I use the Xinerama Xorg.conf (xorg.conf.dual) and added
Code:
Option "UseFBDev" "true"

in the Section "Device" (InternalDevice)
this fixed the flickering for me. Please confirm if it works for you too.

Ok,

MergedFB : flickers, "useFBDev" does not work with MergedFB : flickers.

Well, for MergedFB, it is probably because I did not use cvs xorg, but the one from portage instead. No prob, I want to stick to portage, so I'll wait.

Xinerama : it was a mistake in my xorg.conf, it now works in clone mode, EXCEPT that the mouse cursor is not visible on the external monitor. Kind of a problem :-(

Any idea why the mouse cursor is not visible on the external monitor when using Xinerama ?

Edit : the cursor is OK when in wide screen mode, but is invisble in clone mode.

This just doesn't work at all for me. I'm using Alessandro Ronchi's xorg.conf.dual file and my externalmonitor is just a garbled mess in both clone and spanning mode, though it does change and through the mess I can see elements from the TFT screen. I get the same results with and without fbdev.

The pertinent x errors seem to be:
Symbol drmGetClient from module /usr/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o is unresolved!
apps file failureXlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
ERROR: Can't register client at server

But I will post my x error log for good measure:

This just doesn't work at all for me. I'm using Alessandro Ronchi's xorg.conf.dual file and my externalmonitor is just a garbled mess in both clone and spanning mode, though it does change and through the mess I can see elements from the TFT screen. I get the same results with and without fbdev.

The pertinent x errors seem to be:
Symbol drmGetClient from module /usr/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o is unresolved!
apps file failureXlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
ERROR: Can't register client at server

You must use this file:
xorg.conf.merged
from my howto.

What kernel are you using?

I've tried all the x config files in your HowTo and none of them work for me. My kernel is 2.6.10

Would someone who has got the dual-head xinerama feature working please supply their /var/log/Xorg.0.log so I can compare it with mine? xorg and kernel versions would also be appreciated. I am running xorg 6.8.2 from portage. Should I be using a cvs build instead?

I've tried to use Xorg 6.2 but it does flickers. I think a cvs compile should solve the flickering problem. Anyone had made a vanilla xorg 6.2 working with mergedfb and an external video?

I compiled DRM and MESA from CVS, but the flickering continues.
I don't know if I miss something. Xorg is 6.8.2.

I wold REALLY like to know if there's a solution to this.

Did anyone got this vga-out working with a G3 iBook? lspci says: Radeon Mobility M6 LY
My screen shows a flickering distorted clone of the iBook screen.
What about the TV-out adaptor?

I'm using the latest xorg in portage and I still get the flickering. I was wondering if this flickering will damage the iBook display. It is clear enough if I need to give a presentation, but I don't want to accidently blowout my laptop.

Also does anyone know when the pateches that make flickering stop in the CVS version will make its way to portage?

Just a little nitpick: I read your guide, and I almost got a cookie stuck in my throat when I read the Airport Extreme section :D

For your information, the driver does not yet send or transmit any data. In other words, it is still under heavy development, and is not functional enough to actually be used.

On the other hand, when the driver is functional, your howto should still be valid :)

Well, to be completely honest, the driver page is a little misleading. Don't think the AE is usable yet or ask me when the driver will be finished but...

With our driver, TX/RX work reliably now, monitor mode works, scanning for available networks work. Authentication is mostly done and association is getting close. We're really close to having something that people can use. :)

Also, the howto isn't quite right, for recent versions you'll need the SoftMAC we wrote as well. If you are going to try the driver, please use a svn version instead of this snapshot. See http://bcm43xx.berlios.de for more details.

Now that is great news! Keep up the good work
