As soon as my files are backed up, I'm gonna install Gentoo on my desktop -- a Sawtooth G4 500 Mhz, 1.5 GB RAM. Replaced the cd/dvd drive with a MadDog MegaStor. I have a 160 GB firewire HD, but I can always add more HDs or burn stuff to DVD.

Anyways my goal is to record/edit TV on this thing (anything to avoid buying a Tivo box). I was wondering if anyone's ever tried MythTV or Freevo or tried installing a TV tuner card. I could use Elgato's EyeTV with Mac OS but, I'd rather save space and use an internal card if I can.

Thanks.

I've had great luck with Haupauge cards and ivtv w/ MythTV. You should definitely give it a try. Search for MythTV [HOW TO] on this forum. Its generally for a x86 based machine, but alot of the configs will be the same on ppc.

Just bought a mac mini and have gentoo running.. However, tried installing mythtv and it looks like it isn't available on ppc (from portage anyway). Anyone know how I can force the issue? Edit the ebuild?

You could always install from binaries from the mythtv project. Honestly, I had issues with the emerged version on x86, so I installed from source. Besides you can find some 'cleaner' docs that support binary installs.

I recently made Freevo running on a G4 PowerMac -> works fine.
Currently I try G3 iMac...

Some days ago I registered a project related to this topic - anyone interested is welcome to join :D

mythtv is great! ive been using it for almost 2 years now (x86 backend w/ pvr 250), and i have no complaints whatsoever...

if you are going to install it on a ppc, you might want to wait a few days, the 0.17 release is due this weekend... there has been a lot of work since the 0.16 release, and some patches that make it play nicer with ppc... 0.17 should (??) even have the ~ppc keyword

if you must have it right away you'll have to install from cvs... search the myth lists, there's a few threads on it

good luck!
