Hello,

I have serious trouble starting the Live-CD on an IBM OpenPower 720
I use the install-ppc64-pSeries-minimal-2004.3-update2.iso Image and have only an serial Console, no HMC. There are several different Kernels, or at least differen yaboot options on the CD. Here are the Symptoms:

power5
stops at booting local [OK]

power5-serial-console and power5-hvc-console
stops at returning from prom init

In both cases, i assume that the Machine is working, but i have no Console

pSeries
stops at no bootable device found, specify device or shell for prompt
here i can enter shell and get an ash but what next?

Thanks Jan

okay, have some trouble too with pSeries 720.
I found that there are some "updated" versions of minimal installation CD at http://dev.gentoo.org/~tgall/, but which of these is the right one/latest/recommanded?

Has anyone a bit more experience with this special installation and can give some hints, please?

Hello Jan,

gave 'install-ppc64-pSeries-minimal-2004.3-update2.iso' a try and booted the power5-hvc-console image. This one gave me a (gentoo-) console and a prompt at my management-computer. Unfortunatly this kernel (2.6.10) has no support for ipr (IBM Power RAID Controller) or e1000 (Intel Gigabit Ethernet). Therefor i can not start further installation steps.

Marcus.

Hello Marcus!

I will try this today, but unfortunally i dont have a Managment Computer. I just have a serial Colsole.
I think that the missing ipr-Support cause my Problem with the Message "no bootable device found"

Still having trouble with this? I've used the CDs on my OpenPower boxes in a variety of ways. IPR was built in; so was e1000. Want me to look into it?

Folks,

I downloaded http://dev.gentoo.org/~tgall/install-ppc64-pSeries-minimal-2004.3-update2.iso.bz2

and was able to test it on my openpower 720. I used the power5 hvc boot from yaboot. Both virtual disk and the ipr worked as expected. And the e1000 driver, which is built into the kernel, worked fine as well (was able to lease an address).

If you want more help, maybe look for us on #gentoo-ppc64.
