Hi,

following Problem bothers me for multiple months now.

Booting my machine, the framebuffer works fine. Booting without X I can even work on my 6 consoles without a problem. As soons as X is up and running, switching back to framebuffer results in a blank screen - although the consoles are working (I successfully logged in and restarted my machine) I can't see anything. So I have to stick with X until the next reboot.

I have a PowerMac G4 (silver) and a Radeon 7000 AGP. The framebuffer uses radeonfb as a module (the problem occurs with or without this module). An old thread dealing with an X / framebuffer problem suggested to have DRI working and to set UseFBDev to On in xorg.conf (again - none of these settings semms to do anything to the problem). X uses the radeon kernelmodule. My kernel is 2.6.9-gentoo-r1.

I haven't tried using X with fbdev yet since I think this does not work with DRI?

Thanks for your help in advance,
Chris

Do you have the ATI driver installed? I know that this happens to different cards with certain drivers with my nvidia card(s). I'm assuming the same thing can happen with ATI and it's drivers.

Afraid I can't help you, but I have been having a similar problem lately (screen doesn't go blank, but black with bizarre green patterns), and we're not alone: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=283387 and https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=285545. And it doesn't seem to be a specific problem: not limited to PPC, not limited to radeon (I have a G4 quicksilver with nvidida geforce 2 mx). Moreover, in my case, it must be a problem with a config file. This didn't happen until I did an emerge -uD world about two weeks ago, with lots of files modified in etc-update. I have tried adjusting my xorg.conf, even recompiled the kernel, all to no effect. So any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

spending the last hour with changing several options back and forth I somehow got the thing running now.

My guess is that changing the color-depth of XOrg from 16 to 24bit is definitely part of the solution. Since - as someone in the one of the other posts mentoined - there are two drivers accessing one piece of hardware, they must somehow meet at a screen-setup which they both support. I then played around with "modeline2fb" to find a setup that is compatible with my XOrg setup. I now have XOrg in 1280x1024@60 with 24bpp and my framebuffer with 1280x1024@60 with 32bpp - and it works! :-)

Furthermore I compiled the framebuffer into the kernel (no module) - but I'm not quite shure, if this does anything to solve the problem.
