I have a G3 mac. It has 2 scsi hd's and an ide cdrom drive.
The cdrom drive shows up as /dev/hde
The cdrom drive is connected to the secondary ide socket.
I added a 40gb ide disk to the primary ide socket, it shows up as
/dev/hda (I don't want to overwrite what's on the scsi disks, and I can't
seem to see them in /dev anyway when I boot the live cd).

I ran mac-fdisk giving the "i", "b", and "c" commands to create partitions 1-4 as shown in the handbook. I then gave the "w" command and answered "y" at the prompt to save the table, then "q" to quit.
If I try to create a filesystem with mke2fs it tells me it can't find /dev/hda4. Sure enough I ran mac-fdisk again, and gave the "p" command, it shows no partition table found!
I re-ran mac-fdisk as above, quit, re-entered mac-fdisk and at once gave
the "p" command. No partition table!
HELP!
Is my hard disk somehow write protected? How is this possible?
How can I test this (I'm NOT a mac-guru).

Code:
hdparm -Ii /dev/hda

Probably, triggering some of these settings helps...

Well that sure spat out a LOT of info, most of which is greek to me.
Actually other than NOT supporting DMA nothing looked wrong.

What should I look for?

BTW for grins, I tried partitioning with good ol fdisk
(probably NOT what I want on a ppc mac) just to try and write
a partition table with that. Again, it wouldn't save it.
I may try another disk drive (I have two) or plugging it in as a slave
off the cdrom cable (not sure if that one is cable select or not though).
Other than that I have no idea, need a mac hw guru I guess.

It really gives a lot of info...
The security section should answer your question whether it's locked or something.

 Did you initialize the partition table at first? It's the i-option in mac-fdisk.
Did (mac-)fdisk gave a message at startup saying something about wrong counts or something? I saw this on x86 quite often...
