I've been running gentoo on my G5 for quite a while now (since May 2004, to be precise), and I'm wondering if I should change to ppc 64. I don't need this installation for important work, just for learning about linux, so I'm not concerned if some things are unstable or plain don't work. Nevertheless, I'd be curious to hear from those who've had some experience with ppc 64: I don't see a version of gnome for ppc 64 - did any of you succeed in compiling it? What about xorg - is it reasonably stable? Opoenoffice - does it compile? And: do I need to start from scratch if I want to go 64? Or can components be mixed between 64 and 32? Thanks!

Yes, ppc64(2004.3) works on my G5. I am running gnome2.8, which you can emerge, for example, by twisting /etc/portage/package.keywors file. My xorg used is xorg-6.8.1.904. Both gnome and xorg seem stable on my machine. OpenOffice doesn't compile under ppc64 unfortunatelly, but abiword-2.2.3 and gnumeric work fine. If you install ppc64 on your G5 you can only use 64-bit applications, while there are no 32-bit libraries installed.
Mozilla and firefox don't work under ppc64, I use konqueror instead. KDE 3.3.2 now is stable, which is also a viable environmemt.

Great, thanks for the info! I'll give it a try soon. No Mozila, that also means no epiphany, and I hate the look of kde & friends... Have you tried both ppc 32 and 64 - can I expect more speed if I switch to 64? (That being said, I find ppc 32 on my G5 very fast.)
