For example is there a way that I can change from Ext3 (MacOSX journaled) to Reiserfs (or maybe even XFS?) I know there's a way to format it to Fat32. But I think it would be nice to have it with a faster file system. I'm thinking you would just mount the iPod in Linux then format the file system with whatever file system you want. But the hard part would be making OS X read the formatted iPod. Can OS X read other file systems besides ext2 and ext3? And has anyone attempted to try what I'm talking about?

Yes it should be possible to format the disk differently. To install linux on the iPod you have to add a new (3rd) partition and format it ext3. That is easily done using fdisk:
Code:
fdisk /dev/sda

(In the case your iPod is on sda)

However I don't think the iPod itself can read other than fat or HFS+ filesystems, so you make it kind of useless...

I don't know about filesystems supported by MacOS X

I'll have to check out that site. I forgot to mention the fact of why I want to change the filesystem. I don't really need Linux on my iPod. I just want to use it for Mp3's. But it would be nice to have ReiserFS running on my iPod while I can still use it for Mp3's and still have OS X detecting it as just a normal unmodded iPod.

Edit: Yeah it does look like it's a firmware problem with porting another file system on my iPod. Is there some way to hack the firmware so I can change the file system it can read? This has to be possible since iPod's could only be read on OS X like what a couple months ago. Now you can run it on x86.

This isn't what you wanted but you might find it interesting. Someone just figured out the bootstrap sequence for the ipod. He used some sort of sound proof booth/box to get all the boot-up data. I think you can find links to his experiment on G4-techtv/screen savers web site.
