I just installed gentoo on a dual 1.8GHz G5 Mac and am having a problem that portage doesn't appear to be determining that a package is already installed. On my x86 machine, if I emerged something then tried again immediately following, it would determine I don't need an update. On my ppc64 machine, it always installs it again. This isn't a problem for little packages like my nano example below that don't have any dependencies, but it is a real pain when a small gnome app wants to rebuild all of gnome. I even tried an 'emerge -e system && emerge -e world deep to see if it would solve my problem, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Example:

root@mac etc # emerge -pv nano

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

[ebuild R ] app-editors/nano-1.3.4 -build -debug -justify -ncurses +nls -nomac +slang -spell 0 kB

emerge -u <packages>. emerge <packages> will install them again, I think it's the case also in x86 machine.
