So, I have a Powermac G5, and I don't know much about Linux, and I wanted to try it out. So I downloaded install-ppc64-g5-minimal-2005.3.iso, and loaded it on a CD. I restarted, held the C key, and it loaded up all this stuff that didn't make sense (a bunch of text). After that, it asked me for a keymap or something, and I hit enter. Then, all this text scrolled down until it stopped and said "livecd root #". I didn't know what that was, so I tried a bunch of stuff but nothing worked. What do I do now?

Thanks,
Andy

Mac dude - its a command line! I guess someone should have realised Mac users might not be comfortable with a basic interface like that. I'm not familiar with the Mac LiveCD but I think was waiting for some kernel options (dokeymap?) you otherwise hit carriage return. You really ought to read the Installation Guide first though so you know what to expect.

EDIT: No sorry I misread it - you're actually in! That's it. There isn't a graphical installer. You're going to have to check your network and then start preparing the disc to create boot, swap and root partitions.

Don't knock yourself - you've made two great choices so far.

1. You've got great hardware.
2. You've got great software.

Now with a considerable amount more effort than I suspect you were expecting you will have a great system.

Hi, im currently in the middle of installing Gentoo on my powerbook, and thought id pass on a guide that will help you work through the installation. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-258980.html is working well with me. Only thing is there are some typos, mainly when making your partitions, be sure to use C instead of c. C lets you name, whereas c does not. Good luck, its worth it.
