I just went through installing phpmyadmin so I can get control of mysql admin with a gui interface.
I thought this might be helpful for somebody else as well.

prerequisition
running mysql server (i have version 4.0.22 installed with no changes to the standard install)

#emerge phpmyadmin
this installed 13 packages on my computer php,apache2 and some other packages

update mysql grant tables and the pmadb database:

you need to do the following as root:

# mysql -u root -p < /usr/sharewebapps/phpmyadmin/2.6.1_rc1/sqlscripts/mysql/2.6.1_rc1_create.sql

if you run mysql w/o root password not recomendet you need to take the -p out of the command

reload MySQL

# /etc/init.d/mysql restart

add apache2 to your default startup

rc-update add apache2 default

edit the /etc/apache2/conf/apache2.conf file

uncomment
#ServerName localhost
#LockFile /etc/apache/apache2.lock
to
Code:

ServerName localhost
LockFile /etc/apache/apache2.lock

add the following lines after the LoadModule list
Code:

LoadModule php4_module    extramodules/libphp4.so

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php3
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php4
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

The next command I'm not sure why I had to do them but if you try to start apache2 you get an error could not open log file

cd /usr/lib/apache2
rm logs
mkdir logs

now start apache2

/etc/init.d/apache2 start

the rest can be done as a regular user

opening the page http://127.0.0.1/ should show you the apache welcome screen. If not something went wrong during the installation. You need to have apache2 in order to run phpmyadmin

starting phpmyadmin should know be as simple as opening the webpage
http:/localhost/phpmyadmin

you will be asked for a username and password. This are the username and password from the mysql server

You're done. [/b]
