Ok, I'm stumped, I was originally running macos 9.1, with gentoo on a seperate drive and booting via bootx on an upgraded powermac 7500 with a sonnet g3 450. I have since upgraded to mac os X v10.3.8 - running beautifully mind you, with macos 9.2 as classic mode. The problem now is, I have no idea how to start up my linux OS, bootx won't run from classic mode (if it does, i have no idea if it's working, and I can't reboot into 9.2 (won't start, wrong version).

Anybody got a clue how to work around this? - that is apart from going back to 9.1, I'd like to keep 9.2

cheers
mark

www.os9forever.com has tools to install standalone 9.2 onto machines only meant to accept 9.1, but I don't think that's what you're asking.

I assume you used xpostfacto or something similar to get osx installed on that machine? From what I can tell, because xpostfacto uses a modified version of bootx as part of what it does, using bootx proper on such a machine is pretty much impossible. I'm not even sure if bootx works under osx on old-world machines (wallstreet, beige g3) running it without xpostfacto.

well yes, i am running xpf, (I have sonnet but wanted to try panther) but prior to installing 9.2, I was booting gentoo by bootx after starting the mac while holding down the option key, (boots to 9.1 instead of osx) but either fortunately or unfortunately (depending on which side of the fence you stand) I used os9helper to update to 9.2, as everyone knows (assumed), 9.2 unmodified will not boot on a 7500, there, my problem lies. I know from experience bootx wont work in classic mode, it starts etc, but nothing seems to happen after pressing the linux button. So if anyone is aware of how to get 9.2 running on a 7500 (native), or bootx under osx, i can go boot gentoo

sounds like you know about as much about it as me, and having never used that particular model, I don't think I can add anymore. Sorry

One point though - new macs aren't apparently able to boot os9 natively at all..... my cynical spider sense tells me that apple probably snuck some similar functionality into panther as well as into the recent hardware.
